Comparison

The ONLY Statement Audit vs. generic brand strategy.

Generic brand strategy is built to make you look better than the alternatives. The ONLY Statement Audit is built to remove the alternatives. One produces a look and a set of guidelines. The other produces one sentence that changes what you are compared to.

The real difference

Brand strategy assumes the position. Positioning finds it.

Most brand work starts after the positioning question has quietly been answered, usually by default and usually as some version of the best in our category. Everything downstream then decorates that answer. If the answer was wrong, better decoration does not fix it.

The Audit works the other order. It settles what you are the only one doing, and only then is there anything worth designing around.

Which one you need

An honest split.

If your positioning is already sharp and repeated back to you correctly by clients, you need brand strategy. Design and guidelines will make a clear position travel further.

If prospects compare you on price, if your referrals describe you as a category rather than a specific, or if you cannot say your difference in one sentence without qualifiers, brand strategy will make an unclear position look nicer. Start with positioning instead.
